Open Mic Night in Silver Lake

Track 6 of Before Anyone Knew My Name

[ Lyrics ]

Open mic night, shaky hands, heart on fire.
→ soft hand clap into groove)

Name on the list in pencil, voice caught in my throat,
sweat on the mic stand, spotlight feels like a note
I haven’t learned to sing yet. Legs are buzzing low,
one deep breath and the room starts to glow.
Café lights dim, someone says my name—
I walk up slow like I’m walking through flame.

Guitar tuned wrong, page smudged at the corner,
but the first line hits and the fear starts to falter.
I don’t look up, just the edge of the floor—
’til I hear the bass kick in, and I’m not alone.

Shaky hands, heart on fire, song in my chest like a wire.
One breath, one chance, and I’m flying higher.

Shaky hands, heart on fire, voice cracked but I took the wire.
They clapped for me—me—like I was someone they knew.

Didn’t nail every note, I flubbed the third line twice,
but I finished it whole, like a prayer or a price.
Someone laughed—not at me, with me—light in their eyes.
Then three strangers came close, said, ‘Damn, that felt like my life.’
One played guitar, one made beats on her phone,
we sat in the back, shared dreams we both own.

No names exchanged, just ‘I write too’ and a smile,
and the weight that I carried feels lighter a mile.
We talk all night, music spilled on the table,
first time in months I feel like I’m able.

We don’t need stages, just a light and a seat,
just a voice not afraid to be unsteady, to be me.
No spotlight, no label, no filter, no fame—
just a song in the dark that can’t help but claim:
I’m here. I’m real. I’m beginning.

Shaky hands, heart on fire, song in my chest like a wire.
One breath, one chance, and I’m climbing higher.

Shaky hands, heart on fire, voice broke but I held the wire.
They clapped for me—me—like I was somebody too.

Next week, same time… right?
Yeah. Same time.
